Employee Signage: Perimeter
You are in a preclearance perimeter
The perimeter is only in effect when a conveyance is stationed in preparation for departure to the U.S.
Please also be aware that within the preclearance perimeter, while in effect, U.S. preclearance officers have the authority to:
- Examine the exterior of a conveyance stationed for departure to the U.S.
- Examine, search and detain any goods that are bound for the U.S., including those in possession of the carrier or transportation facility, such as catering supplies.
- Return goods bound for the U.S. to a preclearance area, or require the goods to be returned to a preclearance area by the person in control of them.
- Frisk search any person, if they have reasonable grounds to suspect the person is carrying something that would present a danger to human life or safety.
- Order any person within a designated preclearance perimeter to identify themselves and state their reason for being in the perimeter.
- Detain a person, and goods on the person or under the person’s control, for transfer to Canadian authorities if they have reasonable grounds to believe that the person has committed an offence under an Act of Parliament. Such action could be taken for example, as a result of a preclearance officer’s non-invasive visual inspection of the exterior of a vehicle servicing a U.S. bound conveyance in the preclearance perimeter.
All individuals must cooperate, or not interfere, with U.S. preclearance officers when they exercise these authorities.
